An attribute is a feature of an object or data item that can be described, counted, or measured.

What it means
An attribute answers, “Which feature are we noticing?” A button can have colour, shape, size, material, and number of holes as attributes. Before sorting or comparing, name the one attribute that matters.
Remember it
Point to the feature and name it: colour, shape, length, or number of sides.
Example
Six buttons have different colours and hole counts. Sort them into “two holes” and “four holes.” The active attribute is number of holes; colour is present, but it is not being used for this sort.
Watch for
A feature can be an attribute without defining what the object is. Turning a square changes its orientation, but not its defining attributes.
Common mix-up
Do not mix up an attribute with its value: colour is the attribute; red is one possible value.
