Definition
Degree of accuracy
The degree of accuracy states the place, unit, significant figures, or tolerance used to round or report a value.

Boundary check: The interval [45, 55) comes from nearest-10 rounding—not extra decimal digits.
What it means
Look at the last place or unit the reported value promises. A value to the nearest tenth is more finely reported than one to the nearest whole number. The degree of accuracy describes that rounding or measurement level; it does not prove the measurement is close to the true value.
Remember it
The last promised place tells how finely the value was reported.
Example
A mass written as 12.6 kg to the nearest 0.1 kg has degree of accuracy 0.1 kg. Under ordinary rounding, the original mass is at least 12.55 kg but less than 12.65 kg.
Watch for
Writing many decimal digits does not by itself make a measurement accurate; the stated rounding unit or tolerance must be known.
Common mix-up
Degree of accuracy is about the reporting level, not a guarantee that the measured value is close to the true value.
Exact meaning
In school mathematics, the degree of accuracy specifies how finely an approximate or measured value is reported, such as to the nearest unit, decimal place, significant figure, named measurement unit, or stated tolerance.
