Equal groups
Equal groups are groups that contain the same number or amount in each group.
What it means
Check every group: each must hold the same amount. Four bags with 3 marbles in each make 4 equal groups of 3, so there are 4 × 3 marbles. The same structure can also show division when the total or one group size is unknown.

Example
Twenty buttons are placed equally into 5 cups. Each cup gets 4 buttons, so the arrangement is 5 equal groups of 4 and 20 ÷ 5 = 4.
Watch for
Groups of 4, 4, and 5 are not equal groups and cannot be described by one multiplication fact without changing the arrangement.
Common mix-up
Equal groups means equal amounts inside the groups, not necessarily equal spacing between them.
