Equivalent ratio
A ratio that shows the same multiplicative comparison as another ratio.

What it means
Equivalent ratios are the same recipe resized. If every amount is scaled together, the balance between the quantities stays unchanged. Keep the quantity order and units lined up.
Remember it
Resize the whole ratio, not just one part.
Example
A mix uses 3 scoops of oats for 5 scoops of fruit. Making four times as much gives 12 scoops of oats and 20 scoops of fruit, so 3:5 and 12:20 are equivalent.
Watch for
The compared quantities must stay in the same order. A ratio of oats to fruit cannot be compared directly with fruit to oats.
Common mix-up
Adding the same number to both terms usually changes a ratio. Scale both terms by the same factor instead.
Exact meaning
Ratios are equivalent when corresponding quantities keep one multiplicative comparison. Scaling both terms together by any nonzero multiplier leaves that comparison unchanged.
