Estimation finds a useful approximate value using number sense, benchmarks, rounding, or reference measures.

What it means
An estimate is not a random guess. You use what you know to get near the answer, then check whether the size makes sense. The best amount of closeness depends on the job: choosing a bus may need minutes, while cutting wood may need millimetres.
Remember it
Aim near, not exact—and use a reason to get there.
Example
A school orders 198 pencils for one group and 403 for another. Round to 200 and 400: about 600 pencils altogether. The exact total is 601, so 600 is a sensible estimate.
Watch for
An estimate is approximate; writing an exact-looking result without enough information is not better.
Common mix-up
Rounding is one estimation method, not the whole idea of estimation.
