Definition
Geometric measurement
Geometric measurement finds the size of shape attributes such as length, angle, area, or volume.
Continue from this idea into connected AXIO math.
What it means
First decide what part of the shape you are measuring. A path or side uses length units, a turn uses degrees, a flat region uses square units, and space inside a solid uses cubic units. The number and the unit must match the attribute.
Remember it
Name the attribute before choosing the tool, formula, and unit.
Example
For a rectangle 6 cm long and 4 cm wide, the perimeter is 6 + 4 + 6 + 4 = 20 cm, while the area is 6 × 4 = 24 cm². Both are geometric measurements, but they measure different attributes and use different units.
Watch for
Measuring a block’s mass is measurement, but not geometric measurement, because mass is not a spatial attribute of the figure.
Common mix-up
Perimeter measures distance around a flat figure in linear units; area measures the covered region in square units.
Exact meaning
Geometric measurement is the measurement of spatial attributes of figures, including length, angle measure, perimeter, area, surface area, and volume, using units suited to the attribute.
