Independent variable
In a quantity relationship, the independent variable is the input used to work out the output.
Continue from this idea into connected AXIO math.
Defining relationship
The independent variable goes in first.
The independent variable names the input quantity in a stated relationship. Its chosen or given value is used to determine the dependent variable.
The setup defines the role; an axis position alone does not.
What it means
This is the value you start with. Put it into the rule, and the rule produces the dependent value. In t = 5s, you choose the number of sheets s first, then the total number of stickers t follows.
Remember it
The independent variable goes in first.
Example
A printer makes 5 stickers from each sheet. Let s be sheets and t be stickers, so t = 5s. Choosing s = 6 gives t = 30. The number of sheets s is the independent variable.
Watch for
Independent does not mean unrelated. It is still connected to the dependent variable by the rule.
Common mix-up
The horizontal axis often shows the independent variable, but its role comes from the setup, not the axis alone.
Exact meaning
The independent variable names the input quantity in a stated relationship. Its chosen or given value is used to determine the dependent variable.
