Math skill
A Math skill is a specific maths ability that can be described, practised, and evidenced.
What it means
A skill is a small, usable piece of maths—not a whole subject. You should be able to finish the sentence “I can…” with a clear action. “I can compare two fractions with the same denominator” is a skill. “Fractions” is a broad family containing many skills.
Remember it
Finish “I can…” with one precise maths action.
Example
Broad family: Measurement. Specific skill: choose a suitable unit for the length of an object. A task can practise that skill and collect evidence about how the learner used it.
Watch for
Knowing the name of a term is not always the same as having the skill to use the idea in a task.
Common mix-up
One curriculum standard may cover several Math skills, and one skill may link to more than one standard.
