What it means
Trace the segment from one endpoint to the other. The midpoint is the location reached after exactly half the total distance. It must be on the segment, not merely somewhere that happens to be equally far from the two endpoints.
Remember it
“Mid” means middle: one segment becomes two matching halves.
Example
Segment AB is 14 cm long and M is its midpoint. Therefore AM = 7 cm and MB = 7 cm.
Watch for
A point away from segment AB can be equally far from A and B, but it is not the midpoint because it is not on AB.
Common mix-up
On a number line, the midpoint coordinate is the average of the endpoint coordinates; the midpoint itself is a geometric point.
