What it means
Use millilitres for small amounts of liquid, such as medicine, juice, or water in a cup. The prefix milli- means one-thousandth, so a litre can be split into 1,000 equal millilitres.
Remember it
Picture a litre divided into 1,000 tiny equal parts: each part is 1 mL.
Example
A bottle contains 250 mL of water, then 150 mL is added. It now contains 250 + 150 = 400 mL.
Watch for
Millilitres measure volume or capacity, not mass. A reading of 50 mL does not by itself tell how many grams something has.
Common mix-up
mL means millilitre; mm means millimetre. One measures volume and the other measures length.
