Focus on how much, not how big the objects look. You can count each group, pair items one to one, measure with the same unit, or use a known number relationship. Then state which amount is greater, less, or equal.

Example
Compare 8 shells with 5 stones. Pair one shell with each stone. Three shells remain, so the quantity of shells is greater than the quantity of stones: 8 > 5.
Watch for
Compare the same attribute with compatible units. A 2-metre length and a 150-centimetre length can be compared after using one unit; a length and a mass cannot.
