Row
In an organised array, table, or grid, a row is one set of positions placed side by side.
What it means
Think of a row as a path across a shelf. In a table, the entries beside one another belong to the same row; in a rectangular array, each row contains the same number of positions. Read the headings to know what that row represents.
Remember it
A row is a line of seats: side by side across.
Example
A sticker chart has 3 rows with 4 spaces in each row. The second row contains star, moon, leaf, and key. Reading across that row gives four entries; the whole rectangular array has 3 × 4 = 12 spaces.
Watch for
A line of words in ordinary writing is not automatically a mathematical row; the entries must belong to an organised array, table, or grid.
Common mix-up
A row runs across; a column runs up and down.
Exact meaning
A row groups positions at the same vertical level in an array, table, or grid. Moving along it takes you sideways across the arrangement, through successive columns.
