Skip counting
Skip counting follows a number sequence by adding or subtracting the same step each time.

What it means
Instead of moving one number at a time, make equal-sized jumps. Choose a starting number and a step, then keep adding the step to go forward or subtracting it to go backward. Every jump must be the same size.
Remember it
Same-size jumps through the number sequence.
Example
Start at 3 and skip count forward by 5: 3, 8, 13, 18, 23, … . Each new term is 5 more than the term before it.
Watch for
3, 8, 12, 17 is not one skip-counting sequence because the jumps are +5, +4, and +5 instead of staying equal.
Common mix-up
Counting by 5 does not have to start at 0 or 5. Starting at 3 still gives a valid step-of-5 sequence: 3, 8, 13, … .
Exact meaning
Skip counting is counting forward or backward by repeatedly adding or subtracting a fixed step other than one. The starting number may vary, but the size and direction of the step stay constant within the sequence.
