Definition
Subitising
Subitising means recognising how many are in a small group without counting one by one.
What it means
Your eyes catch the whole pattern instead of visiting every object. On a die, you may know five because you see four corner dots and one centre dot. This quick number sense helps you notice parts inside a whole.
Remember it
See the pattern; know the number.
Example
A domino shows two dots on one half and three on the other. You see 2 and 3, combine them, and know there are 5 dots without saying 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.
Watch for
Pointing to every dot while saying each number name is counting, not subitising.
Common mix-up
A fast count is still counting. Subitising recognises the quantity without tracking the items one at a time.
Exact meaning
Subitising is recognising the number of items in a small collection quickly, without counting each item in sequence. With a familiar arrangement, it can also mean seeing smaller groups and combining their quantities.
