Unit fraction
A unit fraction is a fraction with numerator 1, representing one equal part of a whole.

What it means
The denominator tells how many equal parts the whole is split into. The numerator 1 says you have exactly one of those parts. When the whole stays the same, a larger denominator makes each unit fraction smaller because the whole has been cut into more pieces.
Remember it
The 1 on top means exactly one equal part.
Example
If a ribbon is split into 9 equal lengths, one length is 1/9 of the ribbon. The fraction 1/9 is a unit fraction.
Watch for
2/9 is not a unit fraction because its numerator is 2, not 1.
Common mix-up
For the same whole, 1/10 is smaller than 1/5 because tenths are smaller equal parts than fifths.
