Unit iteration
Unit iteration measures by repeating one same-size unit end to end.

What it means
Choose one unit, keep its size fixed, and move it along the whole length. Each complete placement counts as one. If a unit is skipped, overlaps another, starts in a different place, or changes size, the count no longer describes the length fairly.
Remember it
Same unit. Touching ends. Count each placement.
Example
A ribbon is exactly covered by 6 identical unit tiles placed from its left end to its right end. Because the tiles are the same size and touch without gaps or overlaps, the ribbon is 6 tiles long.
Watch for
Six tiles with a gap between two of them do not measure a length of 6 tiles, because part of the ribbon was never covered.
Common mix-up
The count depends on the unit size. The same strip might be 6 long tiles or 12 short tiles, but each measurement must repeat one consistent unit.

Unit iteration is measuring a quantity by repeatedly placing the same-sized unit along it and counting the placements. For length, the units begin at one common start and lie end to end with no gaps or overlaps.
