Definition
Equivalent fraction
Equivalent fractions look different but name the same number or amount.
Continue from this idea into connected AXIO math.
Boundary check: Both numerator and denominator scale by 4; changing only one changes the value.
What it means
The pieces can be renamed without changing the amount. If every old piece is split into the same number of smaller equal pieces, the number of chosen pieces and the total number of pieces both grow by that factor. The fraction looks different, but its point on the number line stays the same.
Remember it
Change the piece count and piece size together; keep the amount.
Example
3/5 = 12/20 because 3 × 4 = 12 and 5 × 4 = 20. Both numerator and denominator were scaled by 4.
Watch for
Changing only one part usually changes the value: 3/5 is not equivalent to 3/20.
Common mix-up
Larger numerator and denominator numbers do not guarantee equivalence; both must change by the same factor.
Exact meaning
Equivalent fractions are fractions that name the same number. Multiplying the numerator and denominator by the same nonzero whole number, or dividing both by the same common factor, preserves the fraction’s value.
