Simplify a fraction
To simplify a fraction, rewrite it as an equivalent fraction with the numerator and denominator reduced together.
What it means
The fraction keeps the same value. Only its name changes. Find a number that divides both the top and bottom exactly, then divide both by that same number. You can do this in one step with the greatest common factor or in several correct steps with smaller common factors.
Remember it
Whatever divides the top must divide the bottom too, so the value stays balanced.
Example
For 18/24, both 18 and 24 are divisible by 6. Divide both by 6: 18 ÷ 6 = 3 and 24 ÷ 6 = 4. Therefore 18/24 = 3/4, and 3/4 is in simplest form.
Watch for
Dividing only the numerator changes the value. For example, changing 18/24 to 3/24 is not simplification.
Common mix-up
Simplifying does not make the fraction smaller in value; it makes the numerator and denominator smaller while preserving the value.
