Definition
Geometry
Geometry is the branch of mathematics that studies shapes, space, position, size, and movement.
What it means
Geometry asks what shapes are like, where they are, how they fit, and what stays the same when they move or turn. A shape is classified by its defining properties—not by its colour, tilt, or how large it looks.
Remember it
Geometry is the mathematics of shape and space: what is where, and why.
Example
A square drawn like a diamond is still a square because it still has four equal sides and four right angles. Using those properties instead of its appearance to classify it is geometric reasoning.
Watch for
Calculating 7 + 5 by itself is arithmetic. Plotting a point at given coordinates or comparing the angles of shapes is geometry.
Common mix-up
Geometric measurement is one part of geometry; geometry also includes classification, position, symmetry, coordinates, and transformations.
Exact meaning
Geometry studies points, lines, angles, two- and three-dimensional figures, position, measurement, coordinates, transformations, and the spatial properties and relationships that connect them.
