Hundredths count equal shares when a whole is divided into 100; each share equals 1/100, or 0.01.
What it means
Split one whole into 100 equal shares and each share is a hundredth. Ten such shares make one tenth. In decimal notation, the digit two positions after the point counts hundredths.
Remember it
Two places right of the point means hundredths.
Example
The decimal 0.64 has 6 tenths and 4 hundredths. Since 6 tenths = 60 hundredths, 0.64 is 64 hundredths, or 64/100.
Watch for
Hundredths are not hundreds: 0.01 is one hundredth, while 100 is one hundred.
Common mix-up
In 0.406, the 0 is in the hundredths place and the 6 is in the thousandths place; zeros still hold a place.
