Thousandths
Thousandths are parts made by dividing one whole into 1,000 equal parts.

What it means
Move right from the decimal point and each place is ten times smaller: tenths, hundredths, then thousandths. A digit in the thousandths place tells how many one-thousandth pieces are included. Ten thousandths make one hundredth, and 1,000 thousandths make one whole.

Example
In 3.216, the 6 is in the thousandths place. The number is 3 wholes, 2 tenths, 1 hundredth, and 6 thousandths.
Watch for
Do not confuse thousandths with thousands: 0.006 is six thousandths, while 6,000 is six thousands.
Common mix-up
The place name gives the value. In 0.408, the 8 means eight thousandths, not eight hundredths.
Exact meaning
One thousandth is 1/1,000, or 0.001. In base-ten decimal notation, the thousandths place is the third place to the right of the decimal point, and its digit counts thousandths.
