Simplest form
A fraction is in simplest form when its numerator and denominator share no factor greater than 1.

What it means
Look at the top and bottom numbers. If no counting number greater than 1 divides both exactly, the fraction cannot be simplified further. Simplest form describes the finished fraction; simplifying is the action used to reach it.
Remember it
If the top and bottom have no shared “divide-by” number above 1, you are done.
Example
The fraction 10/15 is not in simplest form because 5 divides both numbers. Dividing both by 5 gives 2/3. Since 2 and 3 share only the factor 1, 2/3 is in simplest form.
Watch for
6/8 has the same value as 3/4, but 6/8 is not in simplest form because 2 divides both 6 and 8.
Common mix-up
“Simplest” does not mean the smallest value or a decimal; it means no common factor remains in the numerator and denominator.
